"Come And Take It"
In October 1835 the first artillery round in the fight for Texas' Independence was fired in Gonzales.
Mexico had given the town the canon to protect themselves from Comanches. When unrest began in Texas, Mexico demanded the cannon be returned. When they refused, a hundred Mexican solders were sent to retrieve it. The people of Gonzales told them to "Come and take it. " and fired the first shot of the war.

After the Battle of Goliad, the captured Texans were taken to this Presidio and executed the next day. The casualties were twice as heavy as at the Alamo and resulted in a mass response if volunteers who came to help in the fight for Independence.
